Review: Intriguing indie sci-fi. Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke and Beau Knapp play three 20-somethings who track a computer hacker to the middle of nowhere in Nevada. There they encounter... something. When Thwaites awakes, he finds himself surrounded by government scientists in hazmat suits (led by Laurence Fishburne) who are studying him in a secret, underground lab. His only immediate thought is to rescue Cooke (his girlfriend), who seems to be in a coma, and escape. Fishburne, in his infuriating calm way, warns him against it, but the lack of answers doesnt inspire him to stay still. The first half of this is great. Id easily call it one of the best of the year. Unfortunately, the second half feels like a different film. Its still pretty entertaining, but a lot of the stuff that made the first half so mysterious and suspenseful gets jettisoned for more familiar scenarios. Id still heartily recommend it to any sci-fi fan.
